entry fee can be as much as 30 percent of the buy-in
for very small tournaments (for example, a $10 buy-in
event might use a $3 entry fee). Usually the entry
fee falls somewhere between S percent and 10 percent
of the buy-in. A $500 buy-in tournament would commonly
require an entry fee of $40 (8 percent).
With rare exceptions (such as the Shooting Stars tournament
at San Jose, California's Bay 101), tournament directors
don't know how many entrants they will get to any
given tournament until the moment the tournament begins
(which is usually when registration closes). Occasionally
in large events, anyone who is in line when registration
closes will still be allowed to enter.
